The Giants didn’t reopen the ballpark to full capacity until June 25, 2021, gradually increasing capacity as guidelines for proper distancing changed and vaccination rates increased. The Giants didn’t have any fans — but they did have cardboard cutouts — in the stands for the 2020 home opener, though some people still set up inside McCovey Cove or on the portwalk in front of the water. After sweeping the Dodgers in Los Angeles, the Giants also won their home opener at Pac Bell Park, beating the Padres 3-1.
Regular season
January 23, 2019 – The Giants signed LHP Drew Pomeranz to a one-year contract. January 14, 2019 – The Giants signed LHP Derek Holland to a one-year contract with a club option for 2020. January 5, 2019 – The Giants acquired IF/OF Breyvic Valera in a trade with the Baltimore Orioles in exchange for cash considerations.

If there was ever a time for the Giants to assert themselves as a playoff threat, the two weeks leading up to the All-Star break figure to provide an excellent opportunity. San Francisco will play 10 of 13 games at home before the break with a brief three-game trip scheduled for San Diego. The Giants will also be home for eight games from June 7-June 16 and should be well-rested as they’ll have two off days during the homestand.
AL East
Daniel Jones threw one touchdown pass – to Gallman – in his second career win and the Giants improved to 2–2. Safety Jabrill Peppers also picked off Redskins rookie quarterback Dwayne Haskins and scored a touchdown to seal the victory. Further injury problems affected the team with starting wide receiver Sterling Shepard suffering from ongoing concussion symptoms that could be potentially career threatening.
On December 17, Sills was signed the active roster, and tackle Nate Wozniak was signed to the practice squad. The following day, Gaulden was promoted and defensive end Kevin Wilkins was added to the practice squad. On December 24, Smith was released and full back George Aston signed to replace him on the roster. Slayton and Dickerson were promoted to the active roster on December 27 and 28 respectively. With backup running back Wayne Gallman joining Barkley on the sidelines, Walter was signed to the active roster on October 10, prior to the week 6 matchup against New England. Hilliman was resigned to the practice squad on October 15, 2019 having been waived following the New England game.
NL East
Adding injury to insult on that final Giants’ offensive play, Shepard tore his ACL. The Cowboys dominated the line of scrimmage for much of the game, making plays when it mattered. The Giants as they did the first two weeks en route to victories, hung in there and were scrappy in a great "White Out" atmosphere at MetLife Stadium. Given a second chance, Hopkins drilled the do-over from five yards closer and dealt the Giants a devastating loss. On October 30, 2019 Carlock was released, with punter Sean Smith being signed to replace him the following day. Smith was released on November 5, Safety Sean Chandler was signed to the practice squad on November 6, the day after he was waived from the active roster. That night in Santa Clara, Eli Manning threw three touchdown passes - two to Odell Beckham Jr. - and the game-winner to Sterling Shepard with 53 seconds left to snap a five-game losing streak in a triumph over the 49ers. No word yet on whether it’ll be a split admission affair, but it’s an interesting quirk that allows the team to have a home off day Thursday, June 27. Even coming off of that remarkable season, Giants fans haven’t had an overwhelming reason to be excited as the team’s marquee acquisition was Carlos Rodón, an impressive but oft-injured pitcher who signed a two-year, $44 million contract. Yes, even the final game of the regular season, when the Giants secured their 107th win and clinched the NL West, was not a sellout. • The Giants will play at home on Mother's Day (May 12 vs. Cincinnati) and Father's Day (June 16 vs. Milwaukee).

San Francisco travels south to San Diego for a four-game series beginning March 28. Next year, the Giants will open with seven straight road games as they’ll head north to Los Angeles for a three-game series after visiting Petco Park. The DH likely is coming next season, and Webb has made no secret of the fact that he really wanted to clear the wall at least once in his career.
Later that day, White and Akinmoladun were released and the open spots on the practice squad were filled by tight end Garrett Dickerson, wide receiver Alex Bachman and long-snapper Colin Holba. On November 20, Skipper was signed by the Pittsburgh Steelers, with cornerback Derrick Baity filling the vacancy on the practice squad. On November 27, Scott was promoted to the active roster, and White was re-signed. The Beckham trade meant the Giants had two first-round picks in the 2019 draft, and they added a third during the draft in a trade with the Seattle Seahawks. With those picks, they selected Duke quarterback Daniel Jones at number 6, Clemson defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence at 17, and Georgia cornerback Deandre Baker at 30. All three made the final roster, along with five of the Giants other seven draft selections.
